Programme Solidarité Santé : Garoua Boulaï, l’hôpital qui transcende les différences

Un établissement médical camerounais, situé à la frontière de la Centrafrique, dans une zone en proie aux tensions locales, qui propose une offre de soins diversifiée et complète : médecine générale, imagerie médicale, maternité, etc.

Son influence attire des populations variées, des agriculteurs et éleveurs locaux, des artisans miniers, en passant par les commerçants touaregs ou les réfugiés centrafricains. Tous viennent bénéficier de ces services médicaux. Un établissement ou l’ethnie, la religion ou l’activité professionnelle importe peu. La nécessité est d’apporter un soutien sanitaire et médical dans une zone sous tensions.

Malgré des besoins hospitaliers grandissant, la structure bénéficie du soutien actif de la Cevaa, en association avec les Fonds Otto-per-Mille de la Chiesa. Une collaboration qui a permis d’accomplir différents projets : achat de matériel, financement de rénovation… Un investissement constaté par Claudia Schulz et Mathilde Guidimti.

Dernièrement, les deux organismes ont participé à l’achat d’un générateur, améliorant drastiquement l’efficacité des services. L’appareil permet de doubler le nombre d’imageries médicales (échographies, radiographies, etc.) ce qui a eu pour conséquence de multiplier par deux le taux de fréquentation de l’hôpital protestant.

De la même manière, plusieurs projets ont été financés par la Cevaa, grâce aux fonds OPM Valdese : la rénovation d’un bloc opératoire, deux groupes électrogènes, la construction d’un bâtiment pour le service urgencier, etc.

L’impact concret de ce programme a pu être constaté par Mathilde Guidimti et Claudia Schulz, lors de leur visite de l’hôpital camerounais. Elles ont également rencontré le Dr Adrien Gbedji, responsable de l’établissement médical, et ont salué sa gestion exemplaire qui optimise avec rigueur les ressources mises à disposition.

Des enjeux toujours plus complexes

La structure protestante est toutefois soumise à de multiples défis, liés à la situation géopolitique : seulement 75 lits d’hôpitaux pour 150 accouchements mensuels et la prise en charge de nombreux cas de VIH et de drépanocytose.  De plus, la situation géographique isolée de l’établissement ne permet pas d’attirer de nouveaux médecins, les internes ne restant pas après leur formation.

Pourtant, l’Hôpital Protestant de Garoua-Boulai continue de faire preuve d’une énergie remarquable.

Le Programme Solidarité Santé est fier de soutenir ses activités et se réjouit déjà de partager, dans les mois à venir, les progrès liés à la construction des dix salles de repos et aux autres projets prévus dans l’année.

Solidarity Health Programme: Garoua Boulaï, the hospital that transcends differences

In February, Dr Mathilde Guidimti, head of mission for the Solidarity Health Programme, and Claudia Schulz, secretary general of Cevaa, visited the Protestant hospital in Garoua Boulai.

A Cameroonian medical facility located near the border with the Central African Republic, in an area affected by local tensions, offering a diverse and comprehensive range of healthcare services: general medicine, medical imaging, maternity care, etc

Its influence attracts a diverse population, from local farmers and herders to miners, Tuareg traders and Central African refugees. All come to benefit from these medical services. It is an establishment where ethnicity, religion and professional activity are irrelevant. The need is to provide health and medical support in an area under tension.

Despite growing hospital needs, the facility benefits from the active support of Cevaa, in association with otto-per-mille fund. This collaboration has made it possible to carry out various projects, such as purchasing equipment and financing renovations. This investment has been noted by Claudia Schulz and Mathilde Guidimti.

Recently, the two organisations contributed to the purchase of a generator, drastically improving the efficiency of services. The device has doubled the number of medical imaging procedures (ultrasounds, X-rays, etc.), which has resulted in a twofold increase in the number of patients attending the Protestant hospital.

Similarly, several projects have been funded by Cevaa, thanks to OPM Valdese funds: the renovation of an operating theatre, two generators, the construction of a building for the emergency department, etc.

Mathilde Guidimti and Claudia Schulz were able to see the concrete impact of this programme during their visit to the Cameroonian hospital. They also met with Dr Adrien Gbedji, head of the medical facility, and praised his exemplary management, which rigorously optimises the resources available.

Ever more complex challenges

However, the Protestant structure faces multiple challenges linked to the geopolitical situation: only 75 hospital beds for 150 births per month and the treatment of numerous cases of HIV and sickle cell disease.  In addition, the isolated geographical location of the facility makes it difficult to attract new doctors, as interns do not stay on after their training.

Nevertheless, the Protestant Hospital in Garoua-Boulai continues to show remarkable energy.

The Solidarity Health Programme is proud to support its activities and looks forward to sharing, in the coming months, the progress made on the construction of ten rest rooms and other projects planned for the year.
